Rick and Brenda Rogers, owners of Sierra Sports Rental at Zephyr Cove, recently donated five new tandem kayaks with seats to Douglas County's youth outdoor program.
Dominic Hastings-Molyneux, coordinator of the Outdoor Intervention Program, said the donation of the kayaks will enhance the program operated by the county's juvenile probation department.
"I am extremely grateful that someone in our community recognized our cause and provided positive return for kids who need guidance and direction," he said.
Hastings-Moyneux has operated the 29-year program for seven years.
"The Wilderness Program takes youngsters out of their accustomed lifestyles and puts them into a wilderness environment via activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, snow camping, kayaking, cross-country skiing, white water rafting, scuba diving, hiking, and other challenging outdoor activities," Hastings-Molyneux said.
"The trips last from one to seven days, and are of varying degrees of difficulty. They are often physically and emotionally demanding, and provide an ideal setting for the identification and discussion of both positive and negative behaviors," he said.
Hastings-Molyneux said he met the Rogerses a year ago while running a kayaking trip out of Cave Rock.
"Rick used to work with youth at-risk, running outdoor programs, and he could strongly relate to programs that use outdoor education and outdoor therapy as a modeling tool for youth guidance. He remembered our program and had an opportunity to return to the community."
In addition to at-risk youths referred by juvenile authorities, the outdoor program also benefits students in the Gang Resistance Education and Training program and Safe Schools ambassadors.
Hastings-Molyneux said the wilderness programs welcomes adult volunteers to help on trips.
"Parents and other interested adults are encouraged to become involved," he said. "Willingness and a desire to work with kids are the only skills required."
Hastings-Molyneux said background checks may be required.
