Two car washes on Sunday raised more than $1,600 for Gardnerville 11-year-old Rebecca Martin, who was hit by a car while visiting her grandmother.

About 40 people washed cars, sold bracelets and gift certificates and hosted bake sales to raise the money, according to Kris Garrett, artistic director of Theatre of Artistic Discipline.

Rebecca is recovering in a Southern California hospital. Her parents are there with her. Rebecca's sister Victoria is going to visit her this weekend.

Rebecca was injured in Eagle Rock, Calif., on Aug. 13 while coming home from getting ice cream with her grandmother. She was hit while in a crosswalk.

The next fundraiser in Carson Valley is on Oct. 1 when Domino's Pizza is donating 20 percent of the proceeds from orders between 4 and 8 p.m. to Rebecca's cause.

Garrett asked that people who have frequent flier miles they would like to donate, contact her at toadinc@gmail.com. They would help family members travel from Northern Nevada to Southern California. Victoria, who Rebecca is responding to, is attending Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School and visiting her sister every other weekend.

Garrett said that Rebecca is responding to people who talk to her and has waved goodbye to some family members. Anyone interested in buying "Rebecca Shines" or "Miracles Happen" bracelets may contact Garrett.
