The following is a partial list of the towns and stations in Douglas county, and the manner in which they obtained their names: Double Springs Flat was given that name because there were two springs near together.

Glenbrook acquired its name because it is situated in a beautiful glen, through which a small brook runs.

Edgewood is a later name for Friday's Station. It was named by Mr. Areril because of the natural location of the place.

Twelve Mile House is 12 miles from Genoa. It was originally called Wheeler's.

Rattlesnake Hill probably secured its name from the serpents that infest it.

Jacks Valley was named after Jack Winter.

What is believed to be a shooting record during the present open season on water fowl was made by Fritz Luhrs at the Gardnerville hunting reserve at the Schacht ranch when he brought down eight mallard ducks in one shot. A few moments after he entered a blind on the hunting grounds, a big flock of mallard ducks flew over Luhrs at low range. He was so astounded at the rain of ducks that fell at his first shot that he did not empty his gun. Had he continued shooting he would have exceeded the limit allowed by law.

With Mr. Luhrs was C.E. Miller and they returned home with 20 mallards between them which indicates that duck hunting in Carson Valley is good.

The admission price of $1.75 includes a family style dinner served in the Masonic Hall dining room from 7 p.m. until midnight. The Candy Dance is sponsored by the women of Genoa to raise money for the general maintenance and improvements in the community.

The Douglas School Board voted to not spend the necessary funds to refurbish the old building (old Douglas County High School) at Carson Valley Middle School for use as classrooms, but the district will keep the building in good repair until such time as a use can be found for it. Suggestions made at the September board meeting included selling the land and building or leasing the site for a professional building, shops adult education facility or high-tech use. The good news: it won't be torn down.

The new China Spring Youth Camp gym was named in honor of Sen. Lawrence Jacobsen, R-Minden, Saturday in a ceremony that also honored others who put their efforts into building the camp.

"It was a real tribute to Jacobsen and those who have been involved and how far it has gone in about 20 years. It has come a long way. From shacks to now, a successful program," said Sheriff Ron Pierini.
