A private celebration of life will be at a later date for former Gardnerville resident Staff Sgt. Charles "Sandy" L. Sandell, 84, who died Sept. 19, 1924.

Born Sept. 22, 1924, in Bloomington, Ill., he moved to California in the early 1940s, and then moved to Gardnerville in the mid-1980s.

Staff Sgt. Sandell served with the 144th and 129th Air National Guard and retired as a reserve of the U.S Air Force. He lived in Gardnerville until 2008 when he moved to Redding, Calif., where his daughter lives.

He was preceded in death by son Ronald C. Sandell and wife Marlos Sandell. 

Staff Sgt. Sandell is survived by daughter Charlene Wendland, of Redding, Calif.; grandchildren Matthew Kazee of Lihue, Hawaii, and Lisa Kazee Hesser of Chico, Calif.; great grandchildren Madison, Bella, Andrew and Kiele of Lihue and twins Andrew and Liam of Chico.

A private celebration of life will take place at a later date with close family and friends in Gardnerville.

Arrangements are being made through Allen and Dahl Funeral Chapel in Redding, Calif., (530) 243-1525. 

There will also be a memorial at the Veteran's Administration Cemetery in Igo, Calif., for the family in Redding. That date is pending. Donations may be made in the name of a favorite charity in Mr. Sandell's name.
