The Douglas High girl's tennis team clinched its first-ever league championship in dominating fashion Thursday, beating Fallon 16-2 in Churchill County.
Tigers improved to 8-0 on the year, getting off to an impressive start by outscoring the Greenwave 36-0 in first-round games.
Douglas' singles players, Amelia Ritger, Cesarina Ceglia and Kari TenBroeck, all picked up three wins each.
The doubles teams of Sarah and Emily Weaver and Linsey Glass and Jamie Lundergreen each went 2-0 on the day. Katie Sawicki and Susie White went 2-1 and Gabby Buma and Cate Kegg took a 6-4 victory in the third round.
The Douglas boys' tennis team lost a heartbreaker at home against Fallon Thursday with the Greenwave prevailing on the second tiebreaker to win the match 10-9.
The teams were tied 9-9 after regulation and went 3-3 in the tiebreaker round. Fallon won by have 34 total points, compared to Douglas' 31.
"What a great match," Douglas coach Rod Smith said, "We were so evenly matched, it was a shame someone had to lose this one."
Douglas dominated the singles bracket, winning seven out of nine sets. Fallon returned the favor on the doubles' side, also winning seven of nine.
Garon Athanacio went 3-0 on the day, Craig Stratton picked up a pair of wins and freshman Cody Tindel, playing in his first official match of the season, beat Fallon's No. 1 and No. 3 players. His only loss came in a tiebreaker against Fallon's No. 2 seed.
"Cody played with remarkable composure for having limited tennis experience," Smith said.
Douglas' two wins on the doubles side came from the team of Matt Williams and Matt Thomas.
