Response to The Record-Courier's 15th annual Best of Carson Valley was twice that of last year's with more than 1,400 ballots cast by the newspaper's readers for their local favorites.
Perrenial Carson Valley favorite Douglas High School Football Coach Mike Rippee made a fourth visit to the top slot in polling.
Rippee is in his 25th season coaching the Douglas Tigers.
Douglas High School's Cade Baligad was named the Valley's favorite teacher. The Gardnerville Ranchos resident teaches auto shop and also serves on the Ranchos general improvement district board.
Martial artist 13-year-old Kylie Memro won the vote for favorite athlete. Memro also participates in gymnastics, track and cross country.
Valley residents voted in 75 categories for their favorites. Previously a write-in ballot, this year the newspaper suggested participants based on previous years. Residents could write in their favorites, as well.
Barton Hospice Thrift Store won for the second year in a row. Residents' favorite thrift store was "the nicest and the cleanest," according to Yerington resident Diane Weber.
There were some new names to the top spot this year, with Battle Born Wine taking first place for best wine selection for the first year.
Carson Valley's favorite veterinarian Dr. Cameron Ross was a familiar face to the list, winning a fourth straight first place.
Local favorites Mort's Auto Body, Main Street Barbers and Minden Electric all came in first place.
The newspaper's readers also shared their favorite eateries.
Minden bakery Russell's Mercantile won its category. JT Basque Bar & Dining Room continued its reign as best Basque restaurant. The Wildhorse Pizza Bar & Grill won for the best burgers. Mandarin Gourmet won for best Asian restaurant while Francisco's continued as the Valley's favorite Mexican restaurant.
Newcomer Cowboy Cafe took the first place slot for best breakfast spot.
Best law enforcement officer was deputy Todd McEwen, who last made an appearance on the list in 2007.
