Weather service warns winds will peak this afternoon

A warning of blowing dust and decreasing visibility on Highway 395 in Carson and Washoe Valleys was issued by the National Weather Service at 12:35 p.m. today.

Winds of up to 60 mph were recorded at Meneley Elementary School in the Gardnerville Ranchos this morning.

High winds have been knocking down branches and utility lines around the Valley.

According to the Weather Service, winds will peak at 25-35 mph with gusts of up to 55 mph through 4 p.m. Then winds will switch to the west as a cold front passes over Western Nevada.

The wind will pick up dust with visibility dropping to less than one mile.

Drivers on Highway 395 are warned to be careful.
