An 11-year-old Gardnerville girl who was struck by a car in August is making progress, waving goodbye to visitors and sitting up with assistance.
A fundraiser for Rebecca Martin is 4-8 p.m. tonight, when Domino's Pizza will donate 20 percent of the proceeds from food ordered during that time.
Rebecca has been improving rapidly since she was transferred to the Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center in Downey, Calif., a week ago, according to her father, Shane Martin.
"When she arrived, she could smile, move her left hand and arm, barely move her right hand, count to five on her fingers, and say yes with one finger and no with two fingers," Martin said in an e-mail on Wednesday night. "Since she was transferred to Ranch Los Amigos, she has been progressing very rapidly. For example, she can play catch with a balloon, give a thumbs up, swing a bat and hit a balloon, balance with her hands while sitting up on a bench and walk with a walker for about 50 steps while a therapist holds her back."
She said her first words last weekend after a speaking valve was placed over her breathing tube, and now can greet her mother, father, and her cousin Emma.
Rebecca is a Meneley Elementary School Student. She is the daughter of Shane and Sabrina Martin. Her sister Victoria goes to Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School.
