The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is investigating a rash of vehicle burglaries that began last week.

Sgt. Jim Halsey said most of the victims had left their vehicles unlocked.

"The best tip I can give is for people to lock their vehicles," Halsey said. "Also, do not leave items of high value in the vehicle overnight. That includes cell phones, iPods, GPS units, purses or wallets."

More than a half dozen burglaries were reported in the Gardnerville Ranchos and Johnson Lane.

Missing items included a handgun, global positioning systems, satellite radio, coins, credit cards, children's movies, cell phone attachment, garage door opener, camera, cell phone.

Some of the victims reported their vehicles had been gone through, but nothing was taken.

One woman said she left the vehicle unlocked with the purse and keys inside. She said the purse was taken, but not the keys, or the vehicle.
