A memorial service is this summer in Iowa for Gardnerville resident John W. Sproul, 63, who died Jan. 8, 2010.
Born Nov. 27, 1946, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Mary and Carl Sproul, he played football in school and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in business.
Mr. Sproul was drafted and served in Vietnam.
He traveled after the war and became a horseback rider during the Bicentennial when he rode from New York to California.
He worked for Southland Corp. as a repairman and ended up buying a 7-Eleven in Watsonville, Calif.
He worked for Angelo's Bootery in Gardnerville from 1996 until he fell ill last summer.
There will be a celebration of life 4:30 p.m. July 17 at the American Legion Hall in Lakeview, Iowa.
