Horseback riders will see spectacular views of Carson Valley during the first Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival Pleasure Trail Ride on May 1. The ride begins at the Douglas County Fairgrounds at 10 a.m., head into the Pine Nut Mountains and return in time for lunch.

"We want to share our joy and love of riding and the beauty of Carson Valley with others," said organizer Dave Rich, who heads the ride committee that includes Deby O'Gorman, Lee Bonner and Sara Groenendyke. "It will be an easy, three-hour ride for beginners and intermediates."

The trail ride will lead over flat and gently rolling, sandy terrain and on some dirt roads for about 8 miles. It is one of more than 80 special activities to be held in conjunction with the first Genoa Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival, April 29-May 2. The festival will take place at a dozen locations in and around the town and is sponsored by Genoa and the Carson Valley Arts Council.

Cost of the trail ride is $35 until April 16, when the price goes up to $45. Pre-register at www.genoacowboyfestival.com, the Town of Genoa, 782-8696, or the Carson Valley Arts Council, 782-8207. Sign-ups available at the fairgrounds on the day of the ride.

Riders receive T-shirts and lunch. Raffle tickets will be sold for prizes such as dinners at the JT Basque Bar & Dining Room in Gardnerville and an equestrian first aid kit. Camping available at the fairgrounds April 29, April 30 and May 1 for $5 per day; horse accommodations available for $5-15 per day.

A farrier is on hand 8 a.m. to noon on the day of the ride.

Riders who don't have horses may rent their mounts. To be connected to local riding stables, call Rich at 661-733-0415 or at drich1944@yaho.com for details.
