Baseball: Benson Pitches Reno Past Salt Lake, 7-2

RENO, Nev.- Kris Benson allowed no earned runs in five innings and Doug Deeds hit his first home run with the Aces, as Reno defeated the Salt Lake Bees 7-2 Monday night at Aces Ballpark.


Trailing 2-0 in the third, Deeds blasted a two-out solo home run to bring the Aces within one. Reno took the lead for good in the fifth inning on a Carlos Corporan sacrifice fly, after Sean Coughlin tied the game with an RBI-single. Cole Gillespie added a run-scoring single to extend the lead, and Reno held on for the victory.


Benson (1-0) tossed five innings, striking out five and allowing just two unearned runs. Jason Urquidez was masterful out of the pen, tossing 2.2 innings and striking out four batters. Daniel Stange closed out the game by striking out three in 1.1 innings.


Deeds and Coughlin contributed three hits apiece for Reno, and combined to drive in four of the Aces' seven runs. Ryan Roberts added a triple and scored a run, while Jeff Bailey extended his hitting streak to five games with a two-hit night.


Reno and Salt Lake continue the series tomorrow, with RHP Kevin Mulvey (0-0, 2.84 ERA) squaring off against Salt Lake LHP Trevor Reckling (0-0, 0.00 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
