Swimming & Diving: Tigers swim past Vikings in duals

The Douglas High School swimming and diving teams stayed unbeaten in Zephyr League competition last week as the Tigers dominated dual meets against South Tahoe.


The meet also served as senior day for the team's 19 seniors.


The girls team beat the Vikings 220-66 while the boys won 175-104. The meets were contested in conjuction with a dual meet betwen Spanish Springs and McQueen, although overall results between the four teams were calculated as well.


On the girls' side, the team of Taylor Killion, Haley VonSchottenstein, Michelle Forman and Mary Smithen won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.25 while the team of Meagan Skilling, Chandra Matheson, Anna Jackson and Devyn Hotho was third at 2:08.38.


Emily Anderson, Killion, Smithen and VonSchottenstein won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:45.34 while the team of Kalynn Hobson, Nicole Bennett, Hotho and Yuchen Jin took third at 2:10.29.


Sarah Koontz, Jackson, Matheson and Skilling took second in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:20.02.


VonSchottenstein won the 50 free with a time of 24.57 and Skilling was second at 27.50. Skilling was also second in the 100 fly (1:08.30). VonSchottenstein also won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.58. Also, both the 200 medley and the 200 free relay teams posted the region's top times of the season on Wednesday.


VonSchottenstein's times in both the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke were the best in the Northern 4A so far this season.


Forman led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 free, followed by Killion and Paula Sigala. Koontz won the 500 free with a time of 5:49.81.


Killion was second in the 200 free (2:09.60), followed by Sigala in third (2:17.47).


Koontz was second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:30.60 while Smithen was third at 2:33.72. Katherine Crowe was second in the one-meter diving with a score of 197.60.


On the boys' side, Eric VanBeuge, Cameron Morefield, Kyle Johnston and Colby Cain teamed to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.41.


VanBeuge, Shawn Stubnar, Johnston and Cain won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:36.93. Kyle Jenkins, TJ Smithen, Morefield and Stubnar won the 400 free relay in 3:49.79 and Michael Webster, Michael Darby, Ben Syang and Daniel Palmer too third at 4:15.68.


Cain won the 50 free with a time of 23.07 while Johnston was third at 24.49 and Jenkins was fourth at 25.14. VanBeuge won the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.54.


Jenkins won the 100 free with a time of 56.87.


Nolan Thew led a 1-2-3 sweep of one-meter diving, scoring 180.40 while Darby took second at 145.75 and Luke Isherwood took third at 72.60.


VanBeuge took second in the 100 fly (57.85), followed by Johnston in fourth at 58.95.


Morefield was second in the 500 free (5:44.12) and Stubnar was third at 5:48.40. Morefield also took third in the 100 breaststroke.
