Carson Valley Middle School's inaugural Making Tracks walk to benefit cystic fibrosis research begins 8 a.m. May 1 from the front of the school and covers about 5 kilometers around downtown Gardnerville and Minden.

Carson Valley Middle School eighth-grader Brady Scilingo lost her fight with cystic fibrosis in February. CVMS students chose to support cystic fibrosis research through their Make a Difference program, in remembrance of Brady and to help researchers find ways to improve the quality of life for cystic fibrosis patients.

Residents age 12 and older are welcome to participate in the walk. Younger children may participate if accompanied by a parent. Cost of $10 includes a commemorative T-shirt and refreshments. Submit registration or sponsorship forms by April 26 to the CVMS main office, 1475 Highway 395, Gardnerville.

Money raised from the walk will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to assist in research for a cure for the disease. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States.

The walk is held in partnership with the national Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides fundraising walk, May 1 in Reno. In 2009, nearly $35 million was raised to support cystic fibrosis programs.
