High winds are causing the stretch of power lines along Highway 88 to arc, according to firefighters on scene. NV Energy has been contacted, but emergency personnel say there isn't much that can be done about it.

Firefighters and deputies are driving 88 to confirm there are no lines down.

Dispatchers have received an alarm that indicates the electricity is out at Douglas High School.

High winds blew through the night, with a gust of 72 mph recorded at 3:47 a.m. in Sheridan Acres. The Gardnerville Ranchos experienced a top gust of 45 mph.

A high wind warning is in effect until 5 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service.

Strong winds of 30-45 mph are expected through the day with peak gusts to 70 mph. Wind prone areas, such as Washoe Valley and the foothills can expect stronger gusts of up to 100 mph.

The Weather Service advises that damage to trees, power lines and property is possible with winds. Driving will be dangerous for motorists along Highway 395.

Trucks, buses and trailers are prohibited through Washoe Valley.
