County commissioners and their challengers will be on a panel at the Sierra Nevada Republican Women today at noon. Commissioners Dave Brady and Nancy McDermid and their challengers Lee Bonner and Lawrence Howell will share their positions with the women's group. The women meet at Two Guy's From Italy in Gardnerville. The panel starts at noon. Cost is $15.

James Matlean, 23, is scheduled to appear in East Fork Justice Court today to determine the status of a preliminary hearing. Matlean is accused of shooting Benjamin Oxley on Feb. 21, 2008. Matlean was rooming with Oxley's ex-wife at the time.

It may feel like fall, but summer's going to be back with a vengeance by the beginning of next week. Today expect the high to hit 81 degrees under sunny skies. It's going to be a bit breezy in the afternoon. Contrast that with next Tuesday's forecast, which is calling for a high of 100 degrees, and you can see what I'm talking about. If it hits, it will be the third 100-degree day we've had in 2010.
