Soldier receives Purple Heart

Private 1st Class Timothy Hall received the Purple Heart and an American flag from Sen. John Ensign on July 31.

The Hawthorne soldier lost both his legs in a mortar attack in Afghanistan in early June. Hall has been recovering at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Gardnerville resident Sally Wiley has been gathering DVDs and notes from well-wishers in Douglas County.

She spoke with Hall's father Russell, who is a Reno resident.

"Russell said Timothy's room is so full of cards, balloons baskets etc., that other patients come in just to see all that is there in Timmy's room," she said. "The family feels so blessed for what is being done for Timmy and the family, and they wish to let everyone know how much it means to them that strangers who don't even know them are doing so much to help."

Wiley said Hall is off morphine and is getting his appetite back.

"He is eating chocolate candy and just about everything else," she said. "His favorite's are food from Taco Bell, McDonalds, Burger King and Subway. Russell heads about at least one a day to bring back whatever Timmy has a hankering for, and is happy to do so."

At the time of his injury, he was assigned to the 173rd Brigade Support Battalion out of Bamburg, Germany.

Hall is the son of Eric and Tammy Hamrey of Hawthorne and Russell Hall Sr., of Reno and the grandson of Pat and Alice Miller of Fernley.

Gardnerville resident Sally Wiley is gathering cards and movies for Hall, that she will mail in one package at a time. Wiley has money that was donated for postage.

She asked that people include their names and addresses on cards, so the Hall family knows who the material is from. Donors may bring items by The Record-Courier offices at 1503 Highway 395 in Gardnerville.
