A potpourri of student and instructor art will be on display at Western Nevada College Douglas campus to kick off the new academic year. The exhibit will be on display 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. next week at Bently Hall, 1680 Bently Parkway, Minden.

The public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments at a free reception 5-7 p.m. Aug. 27.

The exhibit will feature works by students who were in spring fine arts courses, and includes mediums such as watercolor, oil, fibers and photography. Art instructors Janice Shedd and Darlene Tyrrell anticipate a show that spans a variety of subjects to create a diverse collection of student perspectives. While students have the freedom to paint what they wish, they often focus on landscapes, florals, portraits and abstracts.

"The show presents an example of the potential of anyone with a desire to learn art," said Tyrrell. "I have seen many beginner painters evolve into fine artists."

The exhibit is made possible in part by the Carson Valley Art Association that has helped provide funds to install the molding and hardware necessary to display the artwork. Art shows exhibit at WNC Douglas throughout the year, and the public is welcome to view them.

A number of art classes will be offered this fall semester, which begins Aug. 30. They include drawing, watercolor, digital photography, and art history.
