Cow County Ball benefit kicks off Saturday

It's time to don your cowboy boots and hat to help a worthy cause - the semi-annual Cow County Ball kicks off Saturday.

The fundraiser for Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans and the Domestic Violence Victim's Assistance Project will be held in Gardnerville this year for the first time, said Odessa Ramirez, assistant executive director for VARN.

The ball is 6-10 p.m. Saturday at the Corley Ranch, 859 Highway 395 South.

The event starts with a chuck wagon grub dinner catered by the Gourmet Cowboy, followed by dancing to the country rock music of Rick Hays & American Steel. There will be raffle prizes and silent auction items, including ski, golf and hotel packages.

More than 100 people have so far replied to reserve seats.

"We can always use more," Ramirez said, "but we understand times are tough right now for people."

She said the Corley Ranch will provide an authentic western experience.

"The atmosphere was great. They have a big old barn and a funky bar. It just seemed like a perfect fit," Ramirez said.

The cost of $50 per person in advance or $60 at the door includes dinner, dancing, and a hosted bar of beer, wine and non-alcoholic refreshments.

VARN and DVVAP provide free civil legal services to low-income people and victims of domestic violence living in Nevada's rural communities.

In addition to its staff attorneys, VARN recruited a panel of private and government attorneys in Carson City, Douglas County and other rural counties who provide free legal services to low-income people.
