World War II veteran and 13-year resident Dave F. Douglass, 91, died Aug. 18, 2010, at his home in Gardnerville.
Born Dec. 7, 1918, in Berkeley, Calif., to John and Maude Douglass, he grew up in Santa Rosa, Calif. The family moved to Oakland, Calif., where he graduated from Roosevelt High School. He was an avid track runner.
He rose to the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, on Nov. 30, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Helen C. Eklof. He worked as a stereotyper for the Oakland Tribune for decades.
He moved to Gardnerville from Oakland. He loved to read, work crossword puzzles and read the Bible. His nickname at the Douglas County Senior Center was the Candy Man, because he always brought candy to his friends there. His favorite saying was "Save the Alamo."
He was preceded in death by wife Helen and many brothers and sisters.
He is survived by daughters Barbara (Larry "Al") Martinez of Gardnerville, and Teri (Mike) Ward of Irvine, Calif.; sister Betty Capannaci of Santa Rosa, Calif.; granddaughters Alison Ward, Tami Martinez and Kim Martinez; and great-grandchildren Austin, Justin, Tara and Amy.
Cremation is at Walton's Sierra Crematory. Walton's Douglas County Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. There will be no services at Mr. Douglass' request.
