It has happened in the past and I didn't know what it meant until last week, when it happened again. I returned home from an errand in town and my answering machine was flashing. As I played the message I realized the people calling didn't mean to and the message recorded their private conversation. Now this could be an embarrassing message depending, although I recognized the voices on my machine.

The county seat of Douglas county, established at Genoa in 1861, will be moved to Minden tomorrow in accordance with an act of the Nevada legislature of 1915. A fine new $25,000 court house has been completed at Minden and awaits the arrival of the county officers and records. The Carson Valley Art Association's annual Scholarship Benefit Art Show was Nov. 6 and 7 at the CVIC Hall in Minden. The show was produced by the volunteer members of the art association and committee head Margaret Biggs.
The Carson Valley Arts Council announced the winners of its sixth annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest. The panel of judges proclaimed the competition was extremely difficult to judge given the vast array of creativity involved in this year's entries. But once the aroma of gingerbread cleared from their heads, winners in the four categories were finally declared.

This week marked a rare occurrence. Late Monday night into early Tuesday morning brought a spectacular total eclipse of the moon. That same Tuesday, the winter solstice arrived. Astronomers note that the last time these events occurred on the same day was 372 years ago, on Dec. 21, 1638. The next time the winter solstice and total lunar eclipse happen on the same calendar day will be Dec. 21, 2094.

I have a really simple and really cheap solution to the problem of arsenic in the Sunrise Estates water system. This solution could also be applied to any other Douglas County water systems with elevated levels of arsenic or other contaminates.
Anita Baldwin, daughter of the late E.J. Baldwin, has gone back to the days of the crusades for the design for the magnificent hotel with which she will replace the Hotel Tallac on the shores of Lake Tahoe. The inspiration for the architecture comes from the ancient castle of the Counts of Ghent in Flanders, where a thousand years ago dwelt Baldwin de Lys from whom the Baldwin family traces its lineage.
With the hustle and bustle of getting ready for the holidays it was so nice to have good weather over this past weekend to escape for lunch. We filled up with fuel and headed out on the motorcycle to Bridgeport via Highway 395 south to Holbrook Junction Highway 208 East. When we got to Wellington we hooked a south on Highway 338 which is a right at the "Y." That took us through Sweetwater Canyon. If you haven't been, it's gorgeous. Not too many cars came from the other direction even though it was a weekend.

Thanks to everyone who braved the rainy weather last Saturday and came out to the annual Holiday Gala. We probably had 400 people through the museum seeing the trees, the gingerbread houses, visiting Santa and buying cookies. Douglas County customers of the North Valley Wastewater Treatment Plant can look forward to the escalation of their monthly sewer bill from the current $51.20 to $89.15 per month in 2015. That is a $38.13 per month increase - 74.7 percent. This is on top of the 29.2 percent increase last October. Where will it all stop?

Douglas County 4-H Poultry Project members competed at the Reno Poultry Show on Nov. 20. We did really great out of the 450 birds. There was a really bad snowstorm all that weekend, so it was lucky all of us made it there.

This year again, Debie Bush and her staff at the Walker General Store have the Giving Tree up in the store to get gifts for children who otherwise wouldn't have a real merry Christmas. It is very easy to contribute to this wonderful effort -- just go to the store, take a card from the tree that has the child's name and their gift wish, buy the gift and return it to the store. On Christmas Eve, Santa will deliver the gifts to the children.

The Douglas Disposal 16th annual food drive benefits the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. Information will be left on trash containers this week, letting customers know to place donations of nonperishable food items in plastic bags beside trash cans to be picked up by Douglas Disposal Dec. 6-10.

The Elk's Lodge did it again, by sponsoring an impressive and successful benefit concert for our veterans: A thank-you for their service. The program and concert, held at St Gall Pastoral Center on Veterans Day, saw a wonderful turnout of about 370 veterans, their families and guests.
Regarding a letter dated Nov. 19 about the uniform not being a costume. I attended the Veterans Day-USO celebration and I know Florence Judd and her grandson Shawn. The comments were both a put-down to the senior center and Shawn.
