A celebration of life will be held at a later date for U.S. Navy veteran John Charles Pekar, 76, who died Nov. 30, 2010 at his home in Gardnerville.
Born Jan. 6, 1934, in Granger, Texas, to Charles and Frances Pekar, he was one of 14 children.
He married Faye Ruth Fleming in May 1953.
Moving to San Diego, Calif., as a young man, he worked as a journeyman electrician for Hunter Electric for 10 years.
He then went to work for the University of California, San Diego, as a project manager retiring in 1992.
In San Diego, Mr. Pekar participated in his sons' sports activities by coaching their little league teams, and was the scoutmaster for Troop 289.
After his retirement, the Pekars moved to Gardnerville in 1992 where he became very active at the Douglas County Senior Center.
He volunteered any way he could including calling the Bingo games, doing numerous repairs and offering vegetables grown in his garden to other seniors at the center.
Mr. Pekar was preceded in death by brother Robert and sisters Janie Klepac, Hattie Volek, Carolyn Redford and Maryann Martinez.
He is survived by wife Faye Pekar of Gardnerville; sons J. Scott (Ninie) of South Lake Tahoe and Tracy L. Pekar of Gardnerville; brother Bart Pekar; sisters Alice Welborn, Francis Polasek, Matylda Klepac, Helen Malcik, Shirley Hutka, Georgia Dubcak and Susan Strokes all of Temple, Texas; grandchildren Neil and twins, Elliott and Faye-Marie Pekar of South Lake Tahoe.
