Now, with two league contests under its belt, the Douglas boys' basketball team will get to start its preseason.
The Tigers cruised to a 75-50 win at North Valleys Tuesday night, running its record to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in Sierra League.
Douglas will host upstart Spanish Springs in the opening round of the Carson Valley Classic Thursday evening in what will be its first non-league matchup of the year.
"That's the weird thing about the league's schedule this year is we've already played two league games, but it's still just our first two games," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said. "Now we can start concentrating on some of the details, like cleaning up fouls and focusing on playing solid defense.
"We'll see how we match up with Spanish Springs."
Douglas struggled from the floor at the start as North Valleys built an early 10-8 lead, but the Tigers responded with a 3-pointer from Connor Hughes near the end of the first quarter that started what would be a 12-2 run.
Douglas never looked back from there, always leading by at least eight points.
"Connor had a great spark for us there at the end of the first quarter to give us a little push and get us going," Thacker said. "I think that's what got us over the top there.
"Getting a win out on the road is always nice, it just took us a little while to get going."
Sophomore Hunter Myers led the team in scoring for the second straight game, pouring in 22 points. While no other Tiger finished in double figures, Douglas still featured its trademark balanced scoring as 12 players put points on the board.
Garrett Getty and Kameron Van Winkle each had seven for the Tigers, Theo Denson, Matt Thomas and Jorey Scott each finished with six, Trevor Shaffer had five, Austin Neddenriep had four, Hughes had three and Chris Downs, Jake Tessmann and Matt Wylie each had two.
The Douglas High girls' basketball team fell back 9-0 to start its game at North Valleys Tuesday night and never recovered, falling 42-33 for its second loss of the year.
Trailing 36-17 heading into the fourth,the Tigers started to fall into a rhythm, opening up a 6-2 run and eventually scoring the final 10 points of the game.
Holly Downer hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored all eight of her team-high eight points in the fourth quarter while Jackie Harper scored seven and Alex Laing added seven.
North Valleys had two players finish with 11 points each and hit five first-half 3-pointers to build a 26-12 lead heading into the locker room.
Douglas got four points from Diana Regalado, two each from Bri Burnside, Carly McCullough, Natalie Freitas and Ebony Cleveland. Erica Macias added one point for the Tigers.
Douglas next competes in the Spanish Springs Invitational starting Thursday.
