EDITOR:
That was an interesting county commissioner's meeting on Dec. 2. Everything seemed to be going OK until commissioner Johnson made a comment about the Good Government Group as the "88 Cups against everything" group.
Now I know that the commissioners may dislike the GGG because they question the actions these governmental officials take and they (GGG) publicly confirm that it is very difficult to obtain information or contact their representatives (the elected commissioners and county employees).
I have to say that Commissioner Johnson has been very good about responding to my questions but some people have voiced the concern that they can't get answers from the commissioners. There must be a problem with our county's communication systems.
I have been told that the GGG was formed because our local government might be doing some questionable actions and it is the right of the citizens to question their political government representatives and to ask for information as to the actions taken by those representatives. After all, the commissioners were elected by us to represent us.
I am very dismayed to see Commissioner Johnson (as my governmental representative) make a statement that vilifies a citizens group that was formed to question and monitor their representatives' actions. To my way of thinking, his comment was just like the actions of our out-of-control federal government. If they (government officials) don't agree with the people (who are not in lock step with their actions), they do everything in their power to make these people look bad.
Another part of Commissioner Johnson's statement is that he named the local business (88 Cups). You have now associated a local business (a very nice one I might add) with an inferred radical group that is against everything. This group isn't against everything; it is against wasteful, oversized, progressive government (federal, state or local).
Oh, by the way, did I note that I am a member of the GGG? No? Well, I am.
