Soroptimist International of Carson Valley awarded $18,000 in grants at their annual awards luncheon at the Carson Valley Inn on Oct. 26.
The funds for the grants awarded during the year came from fundraising events sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Carson Valley during 2009-10, which include Savor the Flavor food and wine tasting and Carson Valley Days button sales.
Education Chair Rosann Turigliatto presented grants to the following organizations: Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Trick or Treat Safety Street and Project School Days.
Student-Achievers of the month, Violet Richardson Award, Women's Opportunity Award and the Landis Scholarship Award will be granted in February.
Environment Chair Nancy McDermid said a grant supported the Carson River Work Day, where elementary school children learn about river conservation and understanding of the ecosystem.
President Cindy White presented the health committee grant to Carson Valley Medical Center to support the Breast Cancer Outreach program. The health committee will also grant a medical scholarship in June.
Human rights/statue of women and economic and social development committee chairwoman Brynn Bertucci presented grants to Aurora Pines Girls Facility, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada, Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley, Carson Valley Community Food Closet's Wacky Waddlers, Douglas County Backpack Buddies, Douglas County TRIAD, Family Support Council's Abbey Crossing, FISH, Partnership of Community Resources and Tahoe Youth & Family Services.
