Another job well done, Carson Valley

Friday saw yet another record-breaking year for the Share Your Holiday Food Drive in Carson Valley.

With 85,000 pounds of food donated by residents to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet and $35,000, support for the annual drive continues to grow here.

That's a good thing, because the need has never been greater.

Last year's 76,000 pounds of food survived until just about Easter, according to retiring food closet board president Len Frueh.

With unemployment consistently above 14 percent for the whole of 2010, there have been plenty of mouths to feed and fewer people to feed them.

But that hasn't slowed us down. Perhaps it has spurred us to greater achievements.

Carson Valley's turnout for the food drive is consistently greater than that of the capital, or even Reno.

That's too bad, because if Carson or Reno could muster the roughly 1.75 pounds of food donated per person in Douglas County, there would be a lot more to go around.

We remind everyone that people are hungry the year around, so keep the food closet in your thoughts throughout the year.

Thanks to all whose generosity will help make the holidays brighter this year.
