Chains or snow tires are being required on Highway 395 from Gardnerville north through Carson City this morning. Road restrictions are also in effect over Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit, Highway 395 from the state line to Bridgeport and pretty much all around Lake Tahoe. Highway 88 is closed between Silver Lake and Kirkwood.

Chains or four-wheel drive are required on Highway 50 and Interstate 80 over the Sierra. There have been two noninjury vehicle accidents in the northbound lanes at Interstate 580 and Paar so far this morning.

A 92 mph wind gust punctuated the storm that saw more than an inch of rain fall in Carson Valley over the weekend, 10 inches of snow on Friday and another 3.5 inches of snow fall Sunday night and Monday morning.

The wind gust hit at 3:22 p.m. and blew glass covered patio tables over on patio deck.

Motorists on the Carson City freeway had to dodge snow clods and traffic control barrels that had blown over.

The wind knocked down large trees, taking power lines with them in the South Lake Tahoe basin. Blowing snow resulted in the closure of Highway 395 south of the California state line to Bridgeport, while several incidents involving vehicles running into snow banks were cleared.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the eastern Sierra and Western Nevada saying moderate to heavy snow will continue with 6-12 inches above 7,000 feet in the Tahoe Basin and Alpine County, and an additional 1-2 feet of snow above 7,500 feet in Mono County.

Snow showers are likely today under cloudy skies, with total daytime accumulations of 1-2 inches expected. Winds will be out of the west at 10-15 mph.

The snow is expected to turn to a mixture around 10 a.m. Tuesday, with the snow level rising to 4,900 feet by Tuesday night.
