The Coleville girls defeated Sierra Lutheran 42-28 in Friday night basketball action. The Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Falcons 21 to 11 in the fourth quarter to take control of a game that had been even for three quarters. "Freethrow shooting, especially in the fourth quarter, and our ability to wear Sierra Lutheran down with a solid defensive effort were the difference," commented Coach Sandy. Coleville shot 62 percent from the charity stripe (18 for 29) compared to Sierra Lutheran's 40 percent (6 for 15).
Coleville missing two starters, Senior Martha Robles with a season-ending knee injury and Lela Gnuse-Stokes with a back injury, and with Senior Linzy Garcia spending most of the first three quarters on the bench in foul trouble had to rely heavily on its younger players. Sophomore guard McKayla Stokes rose to the occasion by leading the Lady Wolves with a game-high 16 points. Twin sister McKenzie Stokes also played a critical role providing a strong defensive effort, scoring 5 points and leading Coleville with 4 assists.
Junior Forward Elizabeth Pierce led Coleville with 10 rebounds and 7 steals and scored 6 of her 10 points in the pivotal fourth quarter. Linzy Garcia ended the game with 6 points and 8 rebounds in limited minutes and Chandell Goode added 3 points.
Coleville enters the holiday break 1-0 in league and 5-2 overall.
Sierra Lutheran improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in 1A play with a 40-37 victory over Hawthorne Saturday afternoon.
Tiffany Patrick led Sierra Lutheran with 20 points, while Mariah West and Stephenie Nieri added seven points apiece.
