County seeks applicants for public administrator

Douglas County has posted the job announcement and 12-page application for the position of public administrator, being vacated by Lynn EnEarl at the end of the year, on the human resources website, www.douglascountyhr.com.

The closing date for the position is Jan. 14. Douglas County commissioners will review applications and appoint a new administrator to fill the remainder of the unexpired term that ends Dec. 31, 2012. The appointed may seek another 4-year term in the 2012 general election.

The initial appointment will be made at commissioners' Jan. 20 meeting at the Tahoe Transportation Center, 169 Highway 50, Stateline.

Earlier this month, EnEarl turned in her second resignation for the position to which she was re-elected on Nov. 2. EnEarl first resigned in August, effective Dec. 1, but after winning re-election, she was required to resign a second time or take office at the beginning of the year.

Under Douglas County ordinance, the public administrator serves as the administrator of the estate of a deceased person. Until Oct. 7, it was linked to the position of public guardian, which is charged with those people who've been declared incompetent and don't have family willing to care for them.

On Dec. 2, the county appointed Claudette Springmeyer to the public guardian position. She is also serving as temporary public administrator.

Requirements for the public administrator job include the following: Must be a qualified elector; be at least 21 years of age on the date of taking office; may not have been convicted of a felony for which civil rights have not been restored by a court of competent jurisdiction; may not have been found liable in a civil action involving a finding of fraud misrepresentation, material omission, misappropriate, theft or conversion; and must reside in Douglas County.

Along with formal employment questions, applicants are required to submit an original photo of themselves, four letters of reference, and a three-page statement explaining their motivation for applying and traits that uniquely qualify them for the job.

The original application packet and six copies must be submitted to the Douglas County Manager, 1594 Esmeralda Ave., Minden, no later than 5 p.m. on Jan. 14.

Benefits for the position include 100-percent-employer-paid medical, dental and vision insurance. Compensation, however, is paid from the estates of deceased persons and varies. There is no direct compensation by Douglas County.
