A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Bishop, Calif., at the House of Mercy Pentecostal Church for Coleville native Freida Brown, 86, who died Dec. 20, 2010.
Born March 20, 1924, in Coleville, to Johnson Washoe and Sadie Wilson Dick, she was the first Native American to graduate at the Washoe Medical Nursing School.
She was a nurse for more 26 years in Mono County and at Northern Inyo Hospital.
She finished her nursing career helping to establish Toiyabe Indian Health Project. Mrs. Brown was a devoted Christian and attended the House of Mercy Pentecostal Church for many years.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, brother Hubert Johnson Dick, daughter Rosalinda Bengochia and her husband of 32 years Steve Brown, who died in January of 2007.
She is survived by niece and adopted daughter Beverly Burns Ellingson of Sacramento; grandchildren Sadie, Eva, Amy, Duke; and nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
