Saving a life

On Jan. 18 I suffered a subdural hematoma. I was in the back bedroom of our home. My husband Dennis could not hear me calling out to him so I dialed my friend Christeen Hanson's cell phone. By the time the phone connected, I could not talk. Recognizing my number she dialed 911.

Efforts appreciated

Police and fire personnel are often recognized for their emergency services, but the power outage this past weekend had me thinking about the unsung personnel who go out in the middle of the night regardless of weather (and it was cold Sunday morning) to work on downed power lines and other causes of outages.

Hands off, Mr. Latshaw

Girls' Basketball: Tigers inch closer to playoff spot with win

CORRECTION: The R-C reported last night that Douglas had clinched a playoff spot with its win over South Tahoe Tuesday night. It turns out that the tiebreaker that would've clinched the spot for Douglas does not apply for the elimination of a team, so Fallon's win in overtime over Carson kept the playoff picture open. A Douglas win over Carson or a Fallon loss to Wooster will put the Tigers into the playoffs. If niether of those things happen, the teams will likely have to meet for a neutral-site play-in game early next week.

Boys' Basketball: Tigers sweep past Vikings

It's Republicans deficit

Only in America can one political party take this country from a projected surplus to a $1.2 trillion dollar deficit in a span of eight years (controlling both the White House and Congress for six of those eight years) and apparently be successful with their base on re-writing history that blames the other party for the deficit and the state of our union.

Gardening in small spaces

When I hear people say "I don't have room to garden," I think of my dad's two tomato plants on a balcony 3 feet by 5 feet. Even though he only grew two plants in pots, he enjoyed his "garden." He tended his plants every day, checking out the blooms, keeping the hornworms away and picking his fruit as it ripened. If you grow one African violet successfully and enjoy doing so, you are a gardener in my book.

Oppose room tax

Oppose motocross

Steve Brown and Harvie Keith have been throwing the same bucket of "motocross goop" against countless locales and counties and their commissioners, etc. in hopes that it would eventually stick somewhere.
