Carson City started work this week on the initial phase of a regional water project that will eventually connect Carson City to Douglas and Lyon counties.

The installation of the first phase of the water main - about 10,000 feet - will begin near Well No. 25 in Riverview Park near the Carson River, said Mark Brethauer, the city's senior project manager for the Public Works Department.

The pipeline will extend west along Hells Bells Road before cutting through vacant property to Fairview Drive. Another leg extends north along Fairview Drive from the roundabout at East Fifth Street to Butti Way where it jogs west along Butti to Airport Road.

No residential service or fire hydrants will be installed with the new water line, as it is strictly a transmission main. It will eventually connect to the city water system at key locations using automated flow and pressure control valves.

The $1.9 million Phase 1 of the transmission main is being paid for entirely by American Recovery and Reinvestment funds, Brethauer said.

Phase 2 will extend south from the roundabout at Fifth Street to the Douglas County border. Phase 3, the east-west leg, will run west in a nearly direct line from the Butti Way and Airport Road intersection up to the Quill Treatment Plant near the top of Kings Canyon.

Completion of Phase 1 is expected in August.

Parking restrictions, lane closures and detours will be required throughout the course of the work. The Carson City contractor El Camino Construction will notify residents of these events.
