We have another fantastic winner in the Douglas County Historical Society's January photo contest. Congratulations to Betti Christensen for her gorgeous photo of a snowcapped Jobs Peak and a snow covered valley. Thanks to Betti and to all those who submitted great January photos.
Of course, that means that the February photo contest is now underway. Start now to plan what February means to you in Douglas County and send in or e-mail your photo by 4 p.m. Feb. 27.
Congratulations to the cast and crew of this year's wonderful melodrama, "Hotel Minden II." There was standing room only for some performances as people really wanted to see this spoof on our valley. Thanks to all who came to see it and enjoy a good laugh out loud.
We have more great things planned for the rest of 2010 and you can be a part of it. Come in or call 782-2555 to join the Douglas County Historical Society. You can get tickets at a reduced price for any events we have planned. You can bring family and guests to visit our museums. You get a member discount in our book stores. You can even be a part of the fun by volunteering. Don't miss a moment more; join today.
The Endowment Funding Seminar for anyone interested in estate planning is 7 p.m. Feb. 10. Specialist Dick Stoeltzing explains wealth transfer and preservation strategies including estate tax, income tax, charitable and non-tax planning issues. He explains the importance of endowment funding. This seminar is open to the public, but seating is limited. Call Cindy at 782-2555 to reserve a seat.
Next in the historical society's lecture series on Feb. 11 is former Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha, whose topic is "When the Rich and Famous Came to Douglas County and Carson City to Tie and Untie the Knot." Guy has worked at the Nevada Historical Society in Reno and served on the Nevada Historical Society Quarterly editorial board. The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and is free to DCHS members, $3 for non-members.
Coming Feb. 18, is Main Street Gardnerville's Let's Whine About Winter wine walk. A registration table will be inside the Gardnerville museum 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. This is a fun event and a great time to check out the museum while enjoying a walk around town. Hope to see you there.
For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
