A proposed 26-foot roadside sign, which the new owners of Carson Valley Inn hope will better advertise the Minden hotel/casino, got the green light from Douglas County planning commissioners on Tuesday.

Planning commissioners voted unanimously to approve a major variance that allows an increase in the maximum height fro 20 feet to 26 feet and an increase in the maximum distance from the grade to the bottom of the sign from 2-8 feet.

The new sign will be the same size as the existing sign on the east side of the casino. The current 26-foot sign was approved in 1984 when there was no height restriction.

The new sign will be located on the west side of the property between the Shell gas station and the tin sheds beside the casino, and it will contain a 14-by-11-foot electronic readerboard.

Project architect Larry Henry said the improvement is necessary for the new owners to compete with casinos further north.

"We want to make it work not just for the local people, but make it enticing to motorists driving on Highway 395," he said. "The sign is important."
