Volunteers from 17 community groups assembled 600 emergency preparedness kits for Douglas County seniors Feb. 4.
The community service project is organized through Douglas County Senior Service to prepare, sort and distribute backpacks to seniors 60 years and older.
Each kit contains eight shelf stable meals, an instant cold pack, a first aid kit, water bottle, three snacks, a gallon of water, two containers of juice, two batteries, a flashlight, a storage pill box, and information from the American Red Cross and Douglas County Emergency Services.
The project was developed by Douglas County Seniors Services using federal stimulus funding from the Aging and Disability Services Division.
Among the groups helping put the backpacks together are the Boys & Girls Club of Carson Valley, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Douglas 4-H Club, TRIAD, the Senior Advisory Council, Young at Heart, Carson Valley Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first and second wards, Carson Valley United Methodist Church, St. Gall Catholic Church, the Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers, the Partnership of Community Resources' Students Taking on Prevention and Gardnerville Elementary School third-graders.
Materials for the backpacks were donated by Walmart, Carson Valley Medical Center, American Red Cross, East Fork Fire & Paramedic Districts, Douglas County Senior Center, DART Dial-A-Ride, Nevada Aging and Disability Services, Harrah's and ABE Printing.
