On top of a boys' basketball win and girls' basketball loss Feb. 12 against rival Carson High, the Douglas High School Tigers went home with another victory.
They raised $2,688.04 for relief efforts in Haiti. Although Carson's total amount of $3,900.87 was more, Douglas, which has less students, clinched the fundraising competition by yielding a higher per-student ratio.
Together, the rival schools raised $6,588.91 for the American Red Cross.
"We had about $1.94 per student while Carson had $1.76," DHS leadership teacher Karen Lamb said. "The money came from class collections, hair dying competition, and the people at the game. We also had a goal of raising $250 during lunch on Friday, and if so, Mr. Swisher would shave his head. We did, and he did."
Lamb said the fundraiser was a great way to bring together the two schools for a good cause.
"It just goes to show that both schools have talented students," Lamb said. "I am so proud of the leadership students, especially Dani Trujillo and Rose Lombino who headed this event and spent countless hours inspiring our students and staff to donate to a good cause .... and to help us beat Carson."
