We may be dealing with some freezing fog and black ice in the Valley this morning, but it won't be anything like those folks who are traveling into the Truckee Meadows can expect. Here's a hint, at 9:21 p.m. Sunday, the NHP Web site had an even dozen property damage accidents over three hours along Interstate 80. This morning there is one property damage accident on 580 at McCarran. The National Weather Service is cautioning motorists to take it easy on the commute this morning.
There are road controls on Highway 395 from Stephanie Way south to the California state line, with chains or snow tires required. Kingsbury Grade and Spooner Summit are also requiring chains or snow tires. Chains or four-wheel drive are required on Highway 88 from Sorensen's most of the way over the hill. Chains or snow tires are being required on 395 from Walker to Bridgeport. On the other hand, Interstate 80 and Highway 50 over the mountains are clear.
We received about a tenth of an inch of moisture in the wettest spots of the Valley, which translated to a smattering of snow. We had nothing like the 18 inches of snow that fell in Silver Springs over Saturday night, or the 2 feet of snow that fell at the National Weather Service Office in north Reno. Heck, Heavenly only got 6 inches of snow from the storm.
The sun will be out today with the high temperature hitting 42 degrees. Expect mostly sunny skies and an east wind 5-10 mph. Another burst of moisture is due Tuesday, with the best chance of rain overnight. Our next shot of snow should be coming Friday night.
