MOUNT ROSE - Not even a fog-enshrouded giant slalom course on Slide Mountain slowed down South Tahoe High in pursuit of its third straight Nevada state skiing title.
With temperatures plummeting into the teens and visibility ranging from one to four gates in front of competitors on Sunday afternoon, the Vikings' entire state contingent was able to make it down the course to post the best five-skier boys' score.
Meanwhile, Whittell High's Simon Nikles, a transfer student from Switzerland,
claimed first place in each race, leading the Warriors to second place overall. Teammate Austin Norton was runner-up to Nikles in slalom and third in GS.
The South Tahoe girls claimed the slalom team title on Saturday but were overtaken by Reno and Truckee in the final standings.
Douglas senior Crystal Rutledge had an exceptional final weekend of her high school career, taking fifth in the overall standings.
Rutledge took sixth in the giant slalom with a time of 32.391 and fellow Tiger senior Hillary Sapp was 10th with a time of 32.291. The race was slated for two runs, but inclement weather on Sunday forced the event to be cut down to the first run.
On Saturday, Rutledge took 13th in the slalom, posting 40.08 seconds on her first run and 42.19 seconds on her second for a total of 82.27.
Sapp was 17th with times of 40.49 and 45.16 for a total of 85.65.
