Soroptimist International of Carson Valley awarded grants totaling $16,000 to four community women during their Feb. 16 meeting at Two Guys from Italy.
The grants enable women to attend college and improve their employment and financial status, while raising children or supporting dependents in single-parent homes.
Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award 2010 winner Elizabeth Hubbard received $1,000 and a certificate. Many recipients of the award overcame divorce, domestic violence and drug and alcohol abuse. Each year more than $800,000 is disbursed to help women achieve dreams of a better life for their families and themselves. Since the Women's Opportunity Award program began in 1972, about $15 million has been disbursed and more than 20,000 women have been assisted.
The club announced Sally Landis Foundation winners, Tracy Hildman, Jackie Smith and Kathleen Jordan, who each received a $5,000 award. Prior to her death, Landis, of Soroptimists of Carson City, requested the club provide scholarship assistance to mothers returning to school or college to improve their circumstances through education. Recipients may use the cash awards for costs associated with education, including books, childcare, and transportation.
Soroptimist International of Carson Valley has worked to further growth, development and success of women and children for 37 years.

Soroptimist International of Carson Valley hosts the Savor the Flavor wine tasting fundraiser, Saturday, at Genoa Lakes Golf Resort. Event features wines, microbrews, food from area restaurants, silent auction and Megabucks slot raffle.
