More than a third of an inch of rain fell in the Gardnerville-Ranchos today. At times during the evening, rain was coming down at .12 inches an hour in Minden. Snow started falling in Alpine View at about 7:30 p.m.
Motorists were caught in the snow in the Sierra with calls for assistance recorded at Highway 50 and 28 at 6:19 p.m., Highway 50 and Glenbrook Road at 7:06 p.m., Highway 50 two miles from the Carson Douglas line at 7:54 p.m. and a mile up the Lake Tahoe side of Kingsbury at 8:03 p.m.
Snow tires or chains were required over Kingsbury Grade and on Highway 50 from the Carson City line to Stateline. Chains or four-wheel drive were required for Interstate 80, Highway 50 and Highway 88 over the passes to California.
The forecast for the rest of the night calls for rain before 4 a.m. and then a rain and snow mix. The low is expected to hit 32 degrees and the wind will be out of the south at 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.
Saturday's forecast calls for rain and snow showers before 4 p.m., with a snow level of 5,000 feet. Little or no snow accumulation is expected in the Valley.
