Several martial arts masters along with the defensive tactics instructors from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office met for a special ceremony on Dec. 11 to honor and recognize Capt. Mike Biaggini.
The ceremony, a condensed version of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, was held at Sierra Dojo Martial Arts Center to recognize Biaggini's 28 years of leadership as a defensive tactics instructor. Defensive tactics refers to the training of police officers in the use of both armed and unarmed methods to perform their duties and stay safe on the job.
Four local martial arts masters, each being a current or former law enforcement officer, made a presentation of a ceremonial black belt and certificate recognizing him as a master instructor of defensive tactics. Each represented a different style of martial arts: Toby Cooling (Order of Isshin-Ryu Systems), Alexander Archie (Goju-Shorei Karate), Kevin Schaller (Kirisuto Kyo Bushido), and Ron Elges (Warriors Guild). A fifth presenter, Soke David McNeill (Goju-Shorei Weapons System), was unable to attend but his presence was felt.
Douglas County was represented by Sheriff Ron Pierini, Undersheriff Paul Howell, Constable Paul Gilbert, and a number of police officers.
