Women's Basketball: Wolf Pack wins WAC opener

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Nevada women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak as it posted a 64-56 win at San Jose State Wednesday night.


With the win Nevada improved to 7-8 overall (1-0 WAC) while San Jose State fell to 4-10 overall (0-1 WAC). Nevada has now won last eight meetings against San Jose State and the Pack won its WAC-opening game for the second straight year.


The Pack used a 15-0 run to go ahead by 16 points, 27-11, with 9:03 left in the first half. During the run Nicole Williams came off the bench to score six points for the Pack as Nevada held San Jose State scoreless for nearly eight minutes.


The Spartans scored on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 12 before Tahnee Robinson hit a three to put Nevada back up by 15, 30-15, with 4:16 left in the first half. Nevada led 37-22 at half.


Robinson led the Pack at the half with 13 points while Shavon Moore had eight points. The Pack shot 48.3 percent (14-of-29) from the floor in the first half while the Spartans shot 23.3 percent (7-of-30)


In the second half San Jose State cut Nevada's lead to 11 early in the second half before Moore's layup put Nevada up by 13, 41-28, with 17:22 left in the game. The Spartans cut the Pack's lead to single digits, 46-37, with 6:20 left in the game before Robinson's three on the next possession extended Nevada's lead to 12, 49-37.


Nevada extended its lead to 16 with 2:41 left to play before San Jose State cut the lead to eight, 58-50, with 1:13 left in the game. Amanda Johnson hit two free throws to put Nevada up by 10 as the Pack went on to get the 64-56 win.


Moore led all scorers with 20 points, Robinson scored 19 and N. Williams added 10. Moore and Kayla Williams each recorded seven rebounds.


As a team, Nevada shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the floor. Nevada outrebounded San Jose State 44-to-31 marking the eighth straight game this year Nevada has outrebounded its opponent.


Nevada will host Boise State on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
