Wrestling: Tigers place 4 at Big Valley Tournament

Another big tournament, another string of impressive individual performances for the Douglas High wrestling team.


Douglas placed 18th overall at the 70-team Big Valley Invitational in Stockton, Calif., over the weekend with four out of 10 Tigers bringing home place medals.


California's Central Catholic won the tournament championship while Reno High was the top Nevada finisher, taking third. Manogue was 10th and Reed was 35th.


130-pounder Michael Sepulveda was the Tigers' top finisher, taking fourth place with a 5-2 record.


Among his highlights on the day were a 17-1 technical fall, a 17-5 major decision and a pin.


Cody Spates took fifth in the 140-pound class, going 4-2 with a pin, a major decision and three decisions.


Dillon Spates took fifth in the 125-pound class, earning a technical fall (17-2) and an overtime win.


Wes Peterson took sixth in the 119-pound class, going 4-3. He had three decisions and a 17-0 technical fall in the tournament.


Harlan Paiz (152) and Zach Falanga (189) each went 2-2 in the tournament.

Falanga had a pin and a major decision before losing to the eventual third-place finisher. Paiz suffered an early loss to the eventual seventh-place finisher.


Heavyweight Patrick Miller picked up a win and Sean Merritt (145), Kyle Matthews (160) and Austin Martin (135) each competed in the tournament as well.


Douglas hosts Manogue at 6 p.m. Wednesday night at will compete in the Alhambra, Cailf., Tournament Saturday.
