Jan. 15, 1915

Beginning this month, the annual salaries to be paid the state officials as filed by the law passed at the 1913 session of the legislature will be as follows: To the governor, $7,000; to the secretary of state, state controller, treasurer, lieutenant governor, attorney general, surveyor general, superintendent of public instruction, clerk of the supreme court, superintendent of state printing and inspector of mines, $3,600 each.


80 years ago

Jan. 17, 1930

One of the leading farmers in Carson Valley stated that the thousands of second growth forest pines now maturing in the Sierras at the headwaters of the Carson River, especially near Markleeville, were largely responsible for conservation of the moisture stored in those higher regions and with the passing of a few more years their growth would insure more water and therefore, better crops for this section.

Jan. 10, 1985

The Douglas County School Board selected Andy Aldax as its new president, Pauline Pearson as vice president, and Dan Stratton as clerk of the board in a meeting Tuesday. All three were unanimously selected. Bob Gardner, Karen Ostrow and Alicia Smalley are new trustees. The trustees saw preliminary plans for a 10-classroom addition to the Carson Valley Middle School and authorized the architectural firm of Vhay and Ferrari of Reno to proceed with design.

Jan. 12, 2000

The official start of election season is more than three months away, but the majority of Douglas County's commissioners are eyeing another term. Kelly Kite said he will try for a second term representing District 5, which covers the northern Carson Valley. Steve Weissinger, who represents the Gardnerville Ranchos, said he hasn't made a final decision, but will run again if his family and health are amenable. Bernie Curtis, who represents District 3, recently said he's "pretty certain" he'll make another bid.
