Three Marines who visited Minden in October were killed in action on Monday.

Staff Sgt. Matthew N. Ingham, 25, of Altoona, Pa.; Cpl. Jamie R. Lowe, 21, of Johnsonville, Ill.; and Cpl. Nicholas K. Uzenski, 21, of Tomball, Texas, were killed in action in Helmand province, Afghanistan.

According to a report, the Marines were caught in an ambush.

All three were assigned to 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

Gardnerville resident Kristine Morris, who is married to Gunnery Sgt. Steve Morris, said she received a call from a chaplain about the deaths.

Morris said she had just delivered a U.S. flag signed by the Marines to Minden.

Her parents organized the Oct. 9 breakfast where 85 members of the 3rd Recon Battalion Bravo Company were fed breakfast.

The unit was in Hawthorne for training, and several Carson Valley businesses contribued to the breakfast. They then went on to tour Lake Tahoe, before they were sent to Afghanistan.

A crowd of residents turned out to greet the Marines, waving flags and cheering.
