Douglas County Parks & Recreation Department offers classes for children to seniors. Registration required for all classes. Information at the office, 1327 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville, or 782-9828.
Yoga focuses on the body, mind and spirit with concentration on control, stretching and breathing. Class is 9:30-11 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays, Feb. 1-25, at the recreation annex building. Bring an exercise mat. Cost, $40.
Beginning Tai Chi. Learn this soft martial arts form with warm-ups, exercises and repetitions. The ongoing class is held on Saturdays in various locations. Cost is $5 per month.
Natural health approaches. Receive a complete personal health evaluation and learn natural ways to support and heal your body with foods, herbs, supplements and remedies. Class is 7-8 p.m. Thursdays, Feb. 4-25, at the recreation annex building. Cost is $40.
Women's self defense. Students age 13 and older learn self defense techniques with a focus on prevention, awareness, and action. Class is 1-2:30 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 13-27, at the Sierra Dojo Martial Arts. Cost is $20.
Horseback riding lessons. Students age 7 and older learn basic horsemanship, general horse safety and basic riding skills in the indoor arena at Sheridan Creek Equestrian Center in Gardnerville. Classes for beginning to advanced students are 5:30-6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Cost is $40 per class.
Dog obedience. Establish good conduct and curb bad habits in a dog obedience class by instructor Guy Yeaman, Feb. 17 through March 24, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Building. Teach your dog to obey the commands heal, sit, stand, stay and recall. Dogs must be at least 4 months old and have a choke chain and fabric or leather lead. Cost is $80.
Cross country skiing. Learn the basic cross country skiing with instructor David Beck who has more than 50 years experience teaching skiing and working as a ski guide. Students need to provide own transportation and equipment. Class is 2-4 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 1-26, at Scott's Trailhead in Hope Valley. Cost is $50.
Fly fishing. Learn mechanics of casting, knots, entomology of the area, matching the hatch, how to read water, gear, and proper catch and release techniques. Class is 6-7 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 23 through March 30, at the Angler's Edge. Cost is $125.
Scrap booking. All day crop with instructor Jackie Gordon, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 20, at Gardnerville Elementary School. Tools available for use. Cost of $10 includes a snack and water.
Digital photography. This recreational photography course covers instruction, critiques, photographic tips and weekend shoots. Class is 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Feb. 2 through March 16 at the recreation annex building. Cost is $85.
Weapon certification. Course meets and exceeds Nevada State concealed weapon certification requirements for handguns. Class is 6-9:30 p.m. Feb. 17 and Feb. 19 at the recreation annex and Feb. 20 at the Douglas County Shooting Range. Cost is $90 plus an additional $10 insurance fee.

Ballet. Students age 3 and older learn ballet and develop concentration, imagination, coordination, self-discipline and confidence. Classes at World Gym. Call recreation department for schedule and cost.
Musical theater. Learn how to audition for musical theater. Prepare a song, learn how to act and learn basic movement. Classes are 6-7 p.m. for ages 6 - 12 and 4-5 p.m. for age 13 and older, Tuesdays, Feb. 2 through March 2, at the Dance Workshop. Cost is $50 per month.
Ballroom dance. Learn fundamentals of the fox trot, swing, waltz and Latin dances. Classes for age 10 and older are Feb. 5-26 at the Dance Workshop in Minden. Cost is $80 per couple.
Little Miss Douglas County Pageant. Allows girls up to age 17 a chance to show off talent. Winners receive banners, crowns and will ride on a float during the Carson Valley Days parade. Pageant is Feb. 20 at the Dance Workshop. Cost is $75.
