The annual American Red Cross Real Heroes program is looking to you to nominate an individual or group that demonstrated courage, dedication and unselfish character by helping someone last year. Animals have also been known to act heroically and their nominations are encouraged as well. Heroes are everyday people who do extraordinary things for others. Often, the hero has helped a perfect stranger. The American Red Cross recognizes these special people or organizations on March 25.
Nominations need to be turned in to the Northern Nevada Chapter office no later than Jan. 22 and should include a digital picture of the nominee. The Nevada Appeal is the media sponsor for the event and has been including nomination forms in their paper. You can also download an application at www.nevada.redcross.org. If you have any questions, you can call Monica Myles at (775) 856-1000.
There are several categories for nominations this year - adult, youth, education, family, firefighter, law enforcement, medical, military, and workplace heroes. Do you know someone in these areas who went above and beyond their normal activities to help another in their time of need? Other categories include those who saved an animal by using their life saving training or an animal that acted courageously. There is even a section for those individuals or groups that prefer to do their good deeds without recognition. They would be nominated as an Unsung Hero. Last year, the First Responder Team at GE/Bently in Minden won in the workplace safety category.
All nominees will be honored at the Real Heroes breakfast 7:30 a.m. March 25 at Harrah's Reno. The winner in each category is announced and presented an award at that time. The public is invited to attend the celebration and can purchase tickets for $25 per person. The proceeds of the event are used for disaster response efforts in our area. Last year our chapter responded to an average of one disaster every three days. This includes fires in homes and apartments.
Found: Beanie Baby
I'd like to ask your help in getting a stuffed animal returned to a little girl who lost it at the Red Cross holiday card signing table where the Parade of Lights ended near Minden Park. The family stopped by and asked about the Beanie Baby once they realized they had lost it, but it was not discovered until everything was taken down. Please call or e-mail me with a description of the toy so that it can be returned to you. Thank you for your help.
Have a ramblin' good week.
