Earthquake hits southern Douglas County

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake south of Topaz Ranch Estates at 1 a.m. today.

The earthquake was centered five miles below the earth, according to the University of Nevada, Reno, Seismological Labratory. It was located east of Topaz Lake and south of the Walker River.

The quake occurred at 1:03 a.m. and was locaterd 11 miles southwest of Smith and 18 miles east of Markleeville.

It occurred near the Antelope Valley fault which follows Highway 395 south to Coleville.

About 20 people reported feeling the quake, according to the UNR site. Most of the people were in Wellington or Gardnerville
