If your commute takes you into the mountains west of Tahoe, leave some extra time, because there are road controls across Interstate 80, Highway 50 and Highway 88, between Tahoe and Truckee and over the Mount Rose Highway. On our side of the hill things are pretty calm, with both Kingsbury and Spooner clear. It's a little slick out there, so watch out.

A second storm is due to arrive in Western Nevada early this afternoon, with snow levels down to the Valley floors. The National Weather Service says we could have several inches of snow in the foothills, but only light accumulations in the middle of the Valley. A winter weather advisory has been issued starting 4 p.m. today.

Fortunately, today is a holiday, so there's no school and no government commuters to contend with. The day off commemorates Martin Luther King's birthday. All government offices and schools are closed, and there's no mail today, either.
