1A Basketball: Lady Wolves stay perfect in league

The Coleville girls' basketball team kept their league record a perfect 5-0 with three wins over the past week.

Lela Gnuse-Stokes scored 13 points and had five steals to lead the Lady Wolves Tuesday night in a 58-12 home victory over Excel Christian. Molly Garcia had eight points and a team-leading 10 rebounds and six steals.

Tori Park scored seven points with Elizabeth Pierce, Linzy Garcia, and Martha Robles each scoring six points in a balanced effort.

On Friday night Coleville outscored league rival Smith Valley 22-2 in the third quarter to overcome an eight-point halftime deficit and secure control of the game.

Linzy Garcia, Pierce, and Gnuse-Stokes each scored 10 points in the 44-31 victory over host Smith Valley.

Key to the victory was a dominating rebounding performance led by Linzy Garcia with 12 rebounds, Park with 11 rebounds, and Robles with 10 rebounds. Robles also had eight points.

Parks and Gnuse-Stokes led the Lady Wolves in assists with six each.

"In the first half we were out of control and that really affected our shooting," Coleville coach Will Sandy said. "We came out more relaxed in the second half and really did a great job of running the offense and setting ourselves up for easy shots.

"We played great defense and owned the boards in the second half. It was a great comeback win by our girls."

The weekend concluded with a 54-13 home victory over Gerlach. Both of the Garcia girls had double-doubles to lead Coleville with Linzy Garcia scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and Molly scoring 10 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.

Gnuse-Stokes continued her solid all-around play with eight points, five assists and six steals. Park and Pierce each had six points and freshman McKayla Stokes added four points.

The Lady Wolves (9-3, 5-0) face their toughest weekend of the season as they host a very tough Mineral County team on Friday night before traveling to the top-ranked Virginia City Muckers on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves basketball team suffered its first league loss of the season Friday at Smith Valley, 65-50.

Cody Clark led Coleville with 14 points, Jay Clark added 13, John Hamilton had 10, Mat Randall and Josiah Huhta each had four, Austin Byers had three and Nico Curti had two in the loss.

Coleville bounced back Saturday night with a 65-31 win over Gerlach.

Randall led the Wolves with 16 points, Jay Clark had 13, Huhta had eight, Cody Clark and Hamilton each had seven, David Sandoval had six and Nathan Hershey and Byers each had two.

The Lady Falcon basketball team fell 52-26 against Hawthorne last week after getting outscored 23-10 down the stretch.

Mariah West led Sierra Lutheran with seven points, Haley Stokes and Tiffany Patrick had four each, McKinze Tynes and Emelie Wurster had three each, Megan Einspahr and Shelby Farney each had two and Karina Young had one.

Stephanie Nieri led the team with three blocks and four rebounds and Tynes, Stokes and Becky Grabow each had three.

On Friday, Sierra Lutheran lost to top-ranked Virginia City 56-12.

Stokes and Nieri led the team with four points each and Nieri grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds.

The Falcons fell 56-37 at Virginia City on Friday after going into halftime tied.

Andrew Deterding had 11 points and Levi Grabow had 10 in the loss.
